The San Diego Sheraton Hotel & Marina Shines Along San Diego Bay

Weddings of Distinction paid a visit to an iconic San Diego wedding property for their June luncheon meeting – The San Diego Sheraton Hotel & Marina (www.starwoodhotels.com).

WoD President Bob Brichmann, DJ and Emcee from Artistic Productions (www.artistic-productions.com) welcomed everyone to our June luncheon meeting. Honored guests included Stephanie Mason, Catering Manager for The San Diego Sheraton Hotel & Marina (www.starwoodhotels.com, Lindsey Campbell, Office Manager for Plush Lounge (www.loungefurniturerental.com) and Ariane Pardubsky, daughter of WoD member Cheryl Byrd, Haynes Antique Car Chauffeuring (www.lancedurant.com).

Stephanie Mason gave us a nice brief overview of the Sheraton and its banquet facilities. Stephanie has been in the hospitality industry for 11 years and at the Sheraton for about two years. The hotel is an incredible San Diego venue on the water with gorgeous views of the downtown skyline. They pride themselves on their service, quality and attentiveness to their wedding clients.

Bob introduced a cute icebreaker to warm up the meeting with a “guess who this is” type question and response quiz. Bob encouraged members to get to know each other on a more personal level as they network and share business leads.

Our showcaser for the day was Cynthia Blase, owner and wedding coordinator of Cynthia Zatkin Events (www.czevents.com). Cynthia, a native Californian, has a passion for event planning. Cynthia has planned events for a non-profit organization on the East Coast and has worked as a catering manager for the Hyatt Aventine in La Jolla. Cynthia strives to foresee what is needed to make her client’s wedding a “red carpet” moment!

Cynthia offers a couple of different packages, including full service, day of and month of planning. Cynthia also has a talented assistant – Andrea. Their ultimate compliment is to hear guests say, “The wedding is so the bride and groom!”

The Board shared several items of internal business. The Brichmann’s annual BBQ/Pool Party/Potluck was announced for July 12th. Co-Marketing Director Lisa Gisczinski, photographer from Elle G Photography (www.ellegphotography.com), shared new web site news and progress. Weddings of Distinction and a day at the beach @ La Jolla Shores Hotel!

La Jolla Shores Hotel (www.ljshoreshotel.com) hosted our May 26, 2009 luncheon and 41 guests were greatly impressed by this seaside paradise. One of three jointly owned properties including the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club and the Marine Room Restaurant, La Jolla Shores offers both restaurant and room accommodations.

Catering Manager Michelle Chang showed off their Acapulco Room for our luncheon meeting and treated us to a delicious lunch. Michelle explained they have a couple of different patio areas for functions and can even tackle a sandy beach ceremony. Give La Jolla Shores Hotel good consideration for your wedding!

One of two member showcasers on the day was Lola Chaney of West Coast Print Brokers (www.westcoastprintbrokers.com). West Coast Print brokers is a women owned business that offers products including business cards, banners, flyers, letterhead and other various collateral pieces. Lola introduced us to her partner Karrie Pyke who runs a subsidiary called Posh Paperie that dials more specifically into the invitation and social announcement industry.

Our other member showcaser for the day was violinist Gloria Paris of Gloria Paris’ Sterling Strings (www.gloriaparis.com). Gloria is a veteran musician and entertainer that specializes in ceremony and reception music. She can assemble different combinations of musicians (duos, trios, singers, etc.) to meet your event needs. After Gloria serenaded our group with some classic music offerings, Merrylin Brichmann (www.artistic-productions.com) offered a sparkling testimonial to Gloria’s gift citing a past pied piper march as Gloria led a wedding group from the ceremony site to the reception through the streets of La Jolla.

News included introductions of new members: Kyle Karges, San Diego High Definition Weddings (www.SDHDWed.com) and Kimmy Terrell, Sensations Show Band (www.sensationshowband.com). Also announced was Andy Hagenah’s secondary membership for video - Disc Go Round DJ & Video Services (www.discgorounddj.com).

Several new marketing ideas were discussed and some anticipated rebranding of the group’s name and web site was shared with all. Several birthdays were announced. Raffle prizes were doled out to excited members including a fabulous gift certificate to the Marine Room restaurant (www.marineroom.com) courtesy of Michelle Chang.

A Gorgeous, Historic Hotel Rolls out the Red Carpet for Weddings of Distinction!

Our monthly luncheon meeting for Weddings of Distinction (www.weddingsdistinction.com) took us to the oldest hotel in La Jolla – The Grande Colonial (www.gclj.com). Nestled in the heart of La Jolla on bustling Prospect Avenue, The Grande Colonial, fresh from a recent $8 mill renovation, offers luxurious guest accommodations & amenities, ocean views, banquet facilities and scrumptious food and beverage.

Our host, Catering Events Specialist Rachel Carney, treated us to a delicious lunch no one will forget. Special thanks to Chef Jason Knibb - the halibut was awesome! The end of the meeting tour of the property gave many members a great idea on how nicely The Grande Colonial will treat their guests (our wedding clients). Rachel’s crew can tackle events ranging from 8 people up to 120.

This husband & wife’s motto is “Art That Thinks.” With their elegant vision and talents, they shoot everything from weddings to portraits, engagements & families. Their reputation is impeccable.

Also showcasing her business was founding president Susan Ashley, owner of Romantic Honeymoons (www.romantichoneymoonsbysusan.com). Susan’s been planning dream vacations and honeymoons for couples for over 15 years. Susan focuses on the couple’s unique tastes and with her insightful and first-hand knowledge of hundreds of resorts and guides them to make quality decisions.

Weddings of Distinction tests different group icebreakers and networking ideas from time to time. This month’s meeting saw assigned seating. Not to take people away from sitting with their established friends, the goal was to initiate people making new friends and business networking contacts. Based on the volume of conversation, I think the exercise was a success.

Various Board members took care of a little business. A few birthday salutations were given. Many wedding leads were exchanged (roughly 100). Raffle prizes were claimed by several members (Starbucks, champagne and a night’s stay at The Grande Colonial). Special thanks to Mary Noriega from Humphrey’s Florist (www.humphreyflorist.com) for the beautiful centerpieces.

US Grant ~ Wedding and Event Showcase

US Grant Shines with a Glorious Day of Style & Fashion

Downtown San Diego had a definite glow above it this past Sunday afternoon, May 19, as the US Grant, A Luxury Collection Hotel, (www.luxurycollection.com/usgrant) staged its first Wedding and Event Showcase, A Journey of Self and Style.

Several dozen of San Diego’s finest wedding industry experts displayed their respective crafts and talents as 300-400 guests roamed the historic halls and ballrooms of the US Grant. Brides, grooms, parents and area industry guests were treated to eye-popping displays, scrumptious culinary delicacies, wonderful music and the jaw-dropping historic beauty of the US Grant.

Proudly…Weddings of Distinction (www.weddingsdistinction.com) had several members invited to display their talents throughout the various ballrooms.

Beautiful floral and décor ideas were shared in the Palm Court by Lois Mathews Design (www.loismathews.com). Anthony Garcia (www.agarciaguitar.com) strummed his flamenco guitar for the Crystal Ballroom’s ceremony display. Coordinator extraordinaire Ann Strobel (www.annsplans.com) showed off her planning and décor expertise in the Celestial Ballroom. DJs/Emcees Bob and Merrylin Brichmann from Artistic Productions (www.artistic-productions.com) offered a soothing mix of downbeat and contemporary tunes as guests entered the festivities in the Palm Court. Plush Lounge (www.loungefurniturerental.com) provided cozy, colorful, warm and much needed lounge furniture for all to relax & reenergize upon.

Hosted champagne, wine, coffees and various specialty drinks quenched everyone’s thirst on the day. Desserts, cakes and cupcakes kept all on a sugar high. The fashion show entertained with the latest fashions. Highlighting the afternoon were several large prize giveaways including a luxury 5 night stay at The Royal Hawaiian (www.luxurycollection.com/royalhawaiian).

Weddings of Distinction certainly celebrates and supports all the innovative ways we can incorporate eco-friendly elements to weddings, and what a great venue this was to learn more about what San Diego vendors have to offer in the way of organic catering and cottons, environmentally conscious hotels, reducing waste at events, reusable rental items, and locally grown flowers- Especially because one of our own members was showcasing! Paula Rae of Rae Florae put together a tabletop design using all seasonal flowers grown right here in San Diego County, as well as natural fiber accents such as bamboo plates and woven raffia- showing off that being green doesn't mean not being beautiful!

Welcome to The Prado at Balboa Park located in the House of Hospitality. The Prado has been a favorite location for generations of San Diegans. The building and park were first created in 1915 for the Panama-California exposition, renovated in 1935 for the California Pacific International Exposition and finally razed and faithfully reconstructed in 1997.

The Prado offers three rooms that can seat a guest list as intimate as thirty to as grand as three hundred. And if the whole building is utilized, a whopping attendance of 2,000 can be accommodated. The Prado also offers the Casa del Rey Moro Garden as a charming outdoor ceremony site.

Lisa began her photography career by buying her first camera in 2000 to bring with her on a trip to Australia. After looking through the lens of a good camera, she was hooked. She shot her first wedding in 2004. She has been working full time as a photographer for the past two years.
Lisa says “It’s not the camera, but the person behind the camera!” Her style is a photojournalistic approach. There are times when posing clients is necessary, but she prefers to “capture the scene as it unfolds”. A modern, carefree approach is what Lisa is gravitated to.

Lisa: Canvas as a medium. Having a photo placed on a piece of canvas makes the photo look more like an original piece of art

Ellie is French Canadian. She holds a nursing degree and has a background in medical history. Ellie’s first job in the beauty industry was working for a salon doing hair. She has since found a niche in specializing in assisting brides with their wedding hair and make up.

Ellie: Each client is unique and individual in their style

Ellie: It is a cost of $150.00 for an hour. They will meet at the salon.
Typically the bride has photos for Ellie to reproduce.

Brides Against Breast Cancer

This was a wonderful cause! This past Friday and Saturday, March 6 & 7, The Henley Company, an Event Management & Concierge Firm, www.thehenleycompany.com, staged a charity Wedding Gown Sale at the beautiful Manchester Grand Hyatt, www.manchestergrand.hyatt.com, in downtown San Diego.

Over the two days, hundreds of brides tried on gowns, tiaras and accessories as they shopped for their wedding. Gowns could be had for bargain prices ranging from $99.00 up to $699.00 with all proceeds going to charity. All participants in the show were volunteers. Various San Diego wedding industry professionals donated and displayed their services on the day, including linens, décor, floral, hair styling, gown cleaning & preservation, lingerie & undergarments, photography, jewelry, lounge furniture and DJ music.

David and his colleague Karen provided a beautiful display of their lounge furniture for our meeting. San Diego Weddings of Distinction members were able to sit in style during the networking portion of the meeting. In speaking with David, I found out that the Barcelona collection that was showcased is his favorite pieces of furniture. The white upholstered bar and the acrylic belly bars (that light up in red, blue, green or LED white) that were showcased are new to his collection.

David began by thanking his staff and crew for a job well done! Plush Lounge is aware that their product is a luxury item. But luxury that the lounge furniture provides is a space where all guests can conjoin, relax and enjoy the event. The lounge is an area that is often set between the dance floor and the formal dining tables creating a welcoming place to pull guests together.

Wedding of Distinction members were greeted by the amazing music being played by Anthony. He specializes in the flamenco style of music. By focusing on one type of music, he is able to provide a high level of detail to that genre. Anthony can enhance his performance by playing along with rhythmic music from an MP3 player.

Anthony can provide ceremony music or beautiful cocktail/dinner hour music for weddings. Anthony can easily adapt to a corporate environment and provide wafting sounds of Spanish guitar. He has performed for company grand openings, wine tasting socials and civic/charity outings throughout San Diego County.

The Special Event Show was a collage of colors, styles, characters and creative energies all bundled under one huge convention center roof! One could not help but be impressed by the vast amount of décor ideas flowing as soon as you entered the hall.

Stacks of fancy chairs were positioned like something out of Disney cartoon float with incredibly beautiful covers and sashes. Artisans displayed their eye for detail with ornately decorated table setting inspirations. Buxom beauties bared scrumptious, custom designed bon-bons for all to enjoy. Party pumping exploding confetti cannons demo’d at will. Background tapestries, linens, draping and gorgeous floral displays flowed like leaves in the wind throughout the hall.

Hundreds of vendors displayed up and coming décor and special event related trends and ideas for industry professionals to consider adding to their repertoire. Some concepts were new, cool and innovative - some were tried and true. One could search for industry insurance, talent representation or internet marketing ideas and, in the same aisle, view creative art, catering concepts and new and exciting technology. It was truly a smorgasbord for those in the special event industry.

We’ll see how many of these ideas we can bring to our San Diego wedding and special event clients!

Michael Johnston was our presenter for our January Weddings of Distinction meeting.

Our first meeting of 2009 was hosted by the Del Mar Hilton, www.sandiegodelmarhilton.com. They are one of our newest members of Weddings of Distinction; Meredith Warfel, Catering Manager is their representative!

Director of Catering, Brittany Lee welcomed our group and spoke about their venue. The Del Mar Hilton boasts a variety of rooms to accommodate different guest list sizes from 25 to 400. The rooms’ names are reflective of their neighbor: The Del Mar Fairgrounds. The room we had our meeting in was the Derby room (originally a night club in the 1980’s). The Derby can seat approximately 80 for a set up of rounds of 10. The Del Mar Ballroom can seat up to 400 guests in a round of 10 set up. Also, the Ballroom can be divided into smaller sections. A Courtyard is the location for ceremonies with a capacity of 400. And of course, there are ample sleeping rooms for clients to book. The Del Mar Hilton is a one-stop shop for brides & grooms!

To reacquaint ourselves and to have a bit of fun, Weddings of Distinction President, Bob Brichmann of Artistic Productions, www.artistic-productions.com, led the group in an ice breaker. Each Weddings of Distinction member introduced themselves and the company they represent. Then Bob asked the member a quirky question to get to know each other on a more personal level.

This month’s Member Showcase Presenter was Wedding Officiant Michael Johnston, California Wedding Services, www.calwedservices.com.

Michael has been officiating ceremonies for over 11 years and he is a co-founder of the South Lake Tahoe Wedding Foundation. Michael offers a traditional style of officiating. He begins with a complimentary consolation with his clients to see if they and he are a fit. After that initial meeting, he will send the bride a groom home with homework to get them thinking about the ceremony and their vows. Next, he will have a (1) hour planning session with the couple. Michael will prepare a copy of the service to the bride and groom for their final approval. He will also be on hand for the rehearsal ceremony. Another service Michael offers includes renewal of vows. Also, he is writing a book of his experiences as being an officiant!

Question to Michael: Do you provide the marriage license?
• No
• However, Michael provides a worksheet to the clients with a check list (including the marriage license) that the couple is responsible for

Question to Michael: Does one need permission to get married on the beach?
• Yes; procure one through the city’s park & recreation department
• However, if it is a small wedding party with a short & sweet ceremony, he will quickly go to the location and perform the ceremony

Question to Michael: Do you provide you own sound system?
• No
• Michael prefers not to use amplification but he will if the couple requests him to or if the ceremony is being recorded for a video

The Special Event, a leading industry trade show is in San Diego this year! The function hosts national vendors and offers educational seminars. It is held from January 28th through the 30th at the San Diego Convention Center. Many of our members, Ann Strobel, Merrylin Brichmann and Karen Kluchonic, strongly encouraged other members to attend! It is a chance to promote San Diego as an event destination to the international attendees.

Hello Weddings of Distinction!

This month, we all were in for a treat when we boarded the 100 foot long, William D Evans paddlewheel boat (www.sternwheelers.com) at the Bahia Resort Hotel in Mission Bay (www.bahiahotel.com). Catering Sales Manager Kelly Instone greeted us all and shared a little about the boat that we had the pleasure of having lunch on. The William D. Evans is the pride and joy of the Evans family, who not only own the Bahia Resort Hotel, but the Bahia Belle, Lodge @ Torrey Pines, The Garage and the Catamaran Resort Hotel (www.catamaranresort.com) just down the street. With packages starting at $8,000.00 for 100 guests, this venue sure is worth every penny! Our first show caser for the afternoon was Ann Strobel of Ann’s Plans (www.annsplans.com). Ann has been coordinating weddings since 1988 (yes, 20 years and counting) and has owned her own business since 2000. Ann shared the most common question from brides - “what do you do/perform”? Her answer is simple, Ann’s job is to orchestrate a flawless, and more importantly, stress free event. Ann has every aspect of your special day covered, from seating arrangements to those who forgot to RSVP. Be sure to contact Ann to ensure your upcoming event is a stress free success!

Lance and Cheryl Haynes, of Haynes Antique Car Chauffeuring (www.lancedurant.com) were next up in line to showcase at this month’s meeting. Lance and his beautiful bride specialize in their highly restored 1920’s cars (valued at over $70,000.00 each). Celebrating the Durant’s 100th birthday, the Haynes do not impose a minimum usage fee on any of their services. Seat belt or not and they’re licensed in the state of California. Their cars are sure to add the extra touch to your wedding day! La Jolla Cove Suites offers a 12,000 square foot rooftop venue overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The maximum occupancy is 225, we book one event a day, and there is no additional charge for a ceremony and reception. I would like to thank Katrina Lacape of Magical Party Rentals (www.magicalpartyrentals.com) for spicing up the rooftop with her beautiful pin tuck aquos linen. What amazes me about Katrina is her willingness to help anyone out. Not only did she bring the linen guys, but she also stuck around and helped French Gourmet and us with set-up!!!

Paula Rae Anderson, of Rae Florae (www.raeflorae.com) was gracious enough to display her beautiful arrangements this month. This month has been the busiest month for Paula Rae, extending her many thanks out to the group for the overwhelming number of leads provided each month. Paula Rae is not just a wedding florist, but also has an online floral order form if you are looking to send an arrangement to that certain someone.

Renee Hirsh with the French Gourmet (www.thefrenchgourmet.com) and A Perfect Day with Renee brought such a delicious assortment of food. Shrimp and chicken to name a few were served family style amongst a table of eight. I did not realize until the meeting just how fun it is to have a family style meal at a work function. Our table had something fun to talk about as we swirled the lazy susan around to each other. Please be sure to keep in mind that Renee is also a wedding coordinator who specializes in day of coordination.

After lunch, the group received the new budget plan approved by the board to increase rates for 2009. Premiere membership has increased to $400.00 and the Associate membership has increased to $250.00. Associate members must pay $30.00 before each meeting that they wish to attend in order to cover the cost of food. For those of you who have multiple businesses within the group, there will be an additional $50.00 charge for each listing on top of your premiere listing. If you are unable to pay for the entire year, be sure to speak to either the President or Treasurer about a bi-annual payment plan.

We had a great turnout at our Tuesday, September 23rd Weddings of Distinction meeting at Maderas Golf Club.

Our guests were Reverend Don Toshach, Shelisa Burke from The Platinum Wedding Show, Sue Silva from Mosaic Catering and our hostess, Susan Khania, Meetings & Special Events Director for Maderas. Susan introduced us to her Assistant, Patrick, and gave us pamphlets and information about the Country Club. At the end of our meeting, we took a tour of this wonderful wedding and party venue.

Our showcaser was our webmaster, Gary Avant from Wisdom Matrix. With a fun handout, he explained the workings and success of our web site and how to benefit from the listings. His emphasis was on linking your individual site to the Weddings of Distinction web site. Linking will increase your business, it’s that simple!!! We will be increasing our etiquette articles to help draw more clients to our web site.

Board Reports: Susan announced our Holiday Party will take place at the newly renovated Continental Catering. Date to be announced soon!

Secretary, Joy, reported that all is well! Anthony, our Vice President, is looking forward to our October meeting at La Jolla Cove Suites. Membership Chairlady, Merrylin, proudly presented WoD membership books to our newest members, Cruz Zahran from Mosaic Catering and Lance & Cheryl Haynes from Haynes Antique Car Chauffeuring. Shannon, our marketing queen, discussed our upcoming fourth quarter web site update (due by October 5th) and has added us to LinkedIn & Facebook.

This past August 26th we met at the beautiful Lomas Santa Fe Country Club. What I personally liked most about this venue is that you can actually watch golfers practicing their swing, while enjoying your special event overlooking the golf course.

David Dorian of the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club informed us that they have a small board room that can accommodate a group of up to 20 and up to 250 in their spacious ballroom. The Lomas Santa Fe Country Club offers an outdoor ceremony site, overlooking the beautiful golf course with ocean view. Parking is complimentary!

Our showcaser for the afternoon was Photographer, Dennis Way, of ABI Photography – (www.abiphoto.com). Dennis has been photographing special events for the last 25 years!!! The biggest competition Dennis has is not with other professional photographers, but with the digital camera. The nice thing about Dennis is that he can do what the average person is not trained or experienced to do. Dennis is able to enhance photographs and remove any blemishes that a bride will not want to remember the day of her wedding. Dennis is able to allow the couple to see their pictures 48 hours after their event has concluded. At that point, the couple will tell him which pictures they like and, more importantly, do not like. Family members will then be able to purchase their pictures the following day. Dennis includes an album in his packages to ensure that they are done right. ABI Photo will even offer an hour of complimentarily photographing if the couple agrees to take their pictures before their wedding so that precious minutes are not lost during the reception.

There are many ways to ask clients or even potential clients if they have all of their vendors secure. I have found that it works best by sending a follow-up email to the client to see how things are coming along. I will ask them “have you decided on a caterer, how about a photographer.” It is at that time that I will provide the names of each member in the group that fits the category that they are still in need of.

Rich talked briefly about the misconception that the Manchester Grand Hyatt is thought to be too big to care about weddings and wanted us to know that weddings are very important to them. The Manchester Grand Hyatt is capable of hosting weddings from 15 to however large you need to go. There are a variety of rooms on property that can handle different sized events and they are even able to cater off site as well. It’s a beautiful property and their luncheon service and food for our event was awesome! Thank you – thank you for hosting us this month!!

Lois Mathews of Lois Mathews Design (www.loismathews.com) was our first showcaser for the afternoon. Lois thanked the group for the amount of referrals that she has been receiving. Lois informed us that she personally aided in fellow member Elaine of Sweet Cheeks Baking Company’s wedding, and invited her up to speak. Elaine stated that Lois is “an amazing florist” and that she was “no more in awe with the work that she had done.” Lois then invited Krista Murphy of the Manchester Grand Hyatt up to talk a little bit about the corporate end of Lois’ work. Krista stated that Lois had placed not just one, but two centerpieces on each table for a corporate event with 270 tables! There was never any question in her mind that Lois was able to flawlessly execute the event. I then had the opportunity to be able to speak a little bit about Lois. I have known Lois for a very long time and feel blessed to know her. Lois is an awesome mentor to everyone that she encounters and yet always remains humbled by her work. Every time a Lois piece is out, you will always notice someone staring at it in amazement! If you are ever in the Bankers Hills part of town, be sure to stop by Lois’ turn of the century barn where all of the magic happens!

Our next show casers for the afternoon were none other than Bob & Merrylin Brichmann of Artistic Productions (www.artisticproductions.com). Writing their presentation of who they are is very difficult for me because we were really too busy doing the Cupid Shuffle and the Cha Cha Slide! Yes, Merrylin was teaching the fancy moves, while Bob kept the music rolling. They thought outside of the box on their presentation this time. Since they did not say much, I will. I have worked numerous events with both Bob and Merrylin and they are such a joy to be around. There is never any doubt in my mind that the event that we are sharing is going to run smoothly. More compliments come back to me about Artistic Productions than any other DJ that has been onsite at La Jolla Cove Suites. The only way to describe this pair is contagious. If you want to have a great time, filled with lots of laughs and many fond memories that will be shared throughout the years, then Artistic Productions is the DJ company that you want at your special event!

What a great time we all had this past month at the San Diego Wine and Culinary Center in Downtown San Diego.

Host Amy Ruiz, and her staff welcomed us all with samples from the Fallbrook Winery Collection. WoD members also greeted our entry into the Center as music ensemble and member Silverwood played for the opening ½ hour. We all enjoyed delicious hors d’oeurve treats from member Authentic Flavors Custom Catering. Delicious fruits, cheeses, crackers and fresh breads…and those lobster bisque shooters…..WOW!

We then turned our attention over to the Director of Sales & Marketing, Amy Ruiz, of the San Diego Wine & Culinary Center www.sdwineculinary.com. Amy informed us that we were sitting in the main bar/ retail area that seats up to 80 and 100 reception style. When opening the air wall, you enter into the Fallbrook Cellar ceremony area that accommodates 160 – 250 guests. Combining both areas and the patio deck, this venue can seat up to 500 guests for your special event! With the Fallbrook Winery as the “house special,” the San Diego Wine & Culinary Center has been open for a little over three years, and already feels like home to all of the staff.

Amy invited all of the members to stop by and introduce their respective businesses to her since she is currently working on updating her wedding packets, and seeks quality vendors for her preferred list. If you did not have the opportunity to speak with her, please be sure to do so in the near future!

We then turned our attention to our first show caser for the afternoon, Silverwood Music Ensemble www.silverwood.com. Making up the band, we had Diane on the flute, Gary on the guitar, and Carol on the violin, playing the “musical tapas” for us. Gary told us just how versatile the group really is, ranging from 2 – 5 artists at a time, and even an occasional vocalist that can sing in up to five different languages. They specialize in Celtic music, but today we had the opportunity to hear a little Jewish, Latin and Greek music for our listening pleasure.

Next to showcase was Catering Sales & Event Coordinator, Karen Goslin, Authentic Flavors and Custom Catering www.sdauthenticflavors.com. Karen partnered up with Cheli Madrid, representing sister company, St. Tropez Specialty Cakes & Desserts www.sdauthenticflavors.com, to bring us not only lunch, but dessert as well. The lunches and light dessert samples were scrumptious!

Authentic Flavors and Custom Catering is a full service catering company that offers to-go menus as well. So whether you are looking for a tasty bite to eat on the beach for a romantic dinner for two, or a formal sit down dinner for 200 at your wedding, Authentic Flavors Custom Catering can design menus for any occasion.

St. Tropez offers simple to extravagant cakes…you name it and they are going to bake it! Today we had the opportunity to sample a few of the many flavors offered: Chocolate Wild Berry, Mocha Cake, Princess Cake/Bavarian and Almond Cake. Very yum!

While introducing ourselves to the group, we all learned that guest Elaine with Sweet Cheeks Baking is going to be on the Food Network on July 13, 2008. Member Lisa Gisczinski from Elle G Photography is getting married!!!!!! Her big day is on July 25th, at Cuvier Park and a private beach house for the reception. A big congratulations to you Lisa!

Wowza…is all I have to say about the wonderful luncheon that we all had the opportunity to enjoy at Roppongi Restaurant & Sushi Bar located at: 875 Prospect in beautiful La Jolla, CA!

Chef Simon Lynn, along with Catering Sales Manager, Cruz Zahran, and her wonderful assistant, Timmery Pearl definitely knocked our socks off with not just one but SEVEN tapas and the most delicious dessert that I have ever had! We all met on the outside patio to enjoy the sun and network before lunch.

Roppongi Restaurant and Sushi Bar has fused together with their sister company, Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza to create Mosaic Catering (all a part of the Ladeki Restaurant Group). In only 10 months, Mosaic Catering was nominated “2nd Best Caterer” in Ranch and Coast Magazine.

Famous for their Polynesian Crab Stack, Mosaic fuses together both restaurants and “puts all of the pieces together!” So if you are looking for the perfect establishment for groups from 30 (in the Buddha room) to 68 outdoors (enjoying the fireplace), Roppongi is it!

The first showcaser of the afternoon was the multi-talented Meleah, who quickly ran down the many, many, and did I mention, MANY talents that she possesses. Meleah started out in the fashion industry and currently teaches as an instructor at the fashion institute. She spends most of her mornings on the weekends creating just the right look for her brides and then dances at Marrakesh in La Jolla as a belly dancer. At Marrakesh, you will find “more hair and less clothing” than what you are used to seeing with Meleah. (yes, I did quote her on that one).

Meleah can also help you with many other areas of your life. As there were too many to talk about, I’m just going to list them in the order that we were told: Personal hair and makeup (specializing between the ages of 25 – 60+); photography; 1st dance lessons; home refurnishing (also known as makeup for your house) and, let’s not forget, once a month, Meleah sends out a newsletter and e-bulletin about different topics relating to ones-self.

Our other showcaser, Harpist Melissa Morgan, wasted no time blowing us away with her talent with the harp. She informed us that there are a number of different types of harps that vary on size and stings. You can find Melissa playing High Tea at the relatively new Grand Del Mar. Melissa is also a long time instructor, based out of her home, with many aspiring harp students.

The thing that I found the most interesting about Melissa is that she opens her home to brides-to-be for a day of relaxation in her home (I sure do wish that I was her neighbor!). They can come and enjoy her backyard garden while listening to her harmonious harp sounds and even take the music that they heard home on a cd. Now how cool is that?!?

This month we met at the breathtaking Sheraton Carlsbad Resort. When I first arrived, I felt as though I was at the Ritz Carlton. We all need to be sure to thank our host, Director of Catering and Conference Series, Debra Ayala. The food was scrumptious, the service was top notch and our group looked great!

We opened the floor with an acknowledgement of our guests for the day’s meeting – host Debra Ayala and Julia from The Sheraton Carlsbad Resort, Susan Khania and Jessica Woodall from Maderas Golf Club and florist Lois Matthews.

Lola Chaney, who had to run thanks to a lead from the Manchester Grand Hyatt, was bumped up for an early presentation of her services as one of the day’s showcasers. Lola is the owner of West Coast Print Brokers (www.westcoastprintbrokers.com)and was introduced to the group through our Founding President, Susan Ashley-Howell. Lola’s business not only stands for quality print but more so for customer service. West Coast Print Brokers consists of nine graphic designers who are able to do anything from business cards to trade show banners and are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Lola has been gracious enough to waive design cost for any Weddings of Distinction member and only charges a little over market on print. Once graphics are complete, there is only a three day grace period before your product is complete.

We then welcomed showcaser and owner of Humphrey’s Florist (www.humphreyflorist.com)and My Wedding Accessories (www.myweddingaccessories.com), Mary Noriega. Mary’s daughter-in-law, Debra Ayala encouraged her to get into the flower business by assisting her at the Princess Resort as their onsite florist. Mary is now semi-retired as a florist and is currently working hard with her online accessory business, www.MyWeddingAccessories.com (www.myweddingaccessories.com). Mary’s accessory business extends nationwide and Mary finds it interesting that the majority of her customers come from either the east, mid-west or south. Her largest sellers are bouquet jewels and cake toppers.

Founding President, and Owner of Romantic Honeymoons, Susan Ashley – Howell announced that she is working hard with Scott Wagner of ChiliCo Catering and Karen Goslin from San Diego Authentic Flavors Custom Catering on our Summer Party. Tentatively hold Sunday, June 15, 2008 on your calendars, time and location is yet to be determined.

Membership, and Co-Owner of Artistic Productions, Merrylin Brichmann spoke proudly about how honored she is to be a part of Weddings of Distinction and how our presence as a group was very predominant at the March NACE meeting. She gave a special kudos to Katrina Lacape of Magical Party Rentals for her beautiful presentation of table linen and chair covers.

Shannon would like to request that we submit 4-5 photographs that best represent our businesses since she has the ability to change them frequently. We also now have a listing on Facebook, please be sure to join!

Secretary and Senior Sales Associate with La Jolla Cove Suites, Joy Richards announced to the group that Weddings of Distinction will have a booth at their 2nd Annual Open House on Thursday, April 10, 2008 between the hours of 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Invitations went out specifying 5:00 – 6:30 but you are more than welcome to come anytime before 8:00 PM. Merrylin and Susan will be responsible for representing the group at a designated table but we are all invited to attend. Greetings!

We had an amazing lunch at the Del Mar Hilton on Tuesday, February 26, 2008. We all gathered together in the Triple Crown Room to network amongst new and familiar faces.

President, Bob Brichmann of Artistic Productions, opened the meeting by introducing the Board Members to the group and four guests:

Bob welcomed the group to our Host and Catering Manager of the Del Mar Hilton, Brittany Lee. Brittany informed us that the Del Mar Hilton has 257 hotel rooms and a variety of venues amongst the property. The Grand Ballroom is the larger of the two venues, and can accommodate up to 400 guests. The more intimate Ballroom is the Derby Room and can accommodate up to 100 guests. The Del Mar Hilton also has a courtyard venue where the actual ceremony is conducted and can accommodate up to 400 guests as well.

Our Showcase for the day was the Owner of Magical Party Rentals (www.magicalpartyrentals.com), Katrina Lacape. Katrina has been in business covering chairs and draping table linen since 2002. Katrina contributed to over 190 events last year as well as expanded a new storefront in the Sorrento Valley Area. Magical Party Rentals is about high quality products at a reasonable price as well as award winning customer service. Katrina is expanding the corporate industry and has the ability to special order any linen with only one weeks notice...and will be providing linen at the NACE event in March.

1^st WoD Meeting of 2008

What an amazing lunch at Azul in La Jolla (www.brigantine.com/azul)! WoD met this past Tues., Jan. 22^nd and kicked off ’08 in style. GM Helen Nguyen and her staff outdid themselves with a delicious buffet of culinary treats for our members and fantastic service. We also thank her for contributing a bottle of wine for our monthly raffle. Everyone should visit this wonderful restaurant!

We had a great turnout of 26 members and guests and our featured member for the day, violinist Gloria Paris from Gloria Paris’ Sterling Strings (www.gloriaparis.com), serenaded us both prior to the luncheon and briefly toward the end. It is so special to have Gloria as part of Weddings of Distinction.

Our 2008 Board of Directors and committee chairs were introduced and each had an opportunity to share some ideas in the works for the group for the year ahead.

Look for continued membership growth as WoD continues to be a warm, inviting networking group – not too big & not too small. Dozens of business leads were exchanged amongst members throughout the mtg. New year dues were collected.

New marketing ideas and future plans were discussed. These include taking advantage of monthly bridal lists from current advertising to drive an email marketing campaign aimed at brides & grooms. We may utilize this idea to promote the group within the special event and wedding industries, too.

New brochures are about to be printed. We use these to promote the group with prospective brides, industry people and with the venues we visit each month for our meetings. We’ll also be updating our web site very soon. Members who have changes are encouraged to view their listings and get back to Shannon Henry ASAP.

A quick shout-out to Dalice from Premiere Weddings & Events on the new addition to her family. Dylan Johnson Haugum was born on Dec. 24, 2007 @ 9:52pm. And…Happy “21^st”Birthday to Mr. Dennis Way from ABI Photography.

Hello Members,

We had an unforgettable meeting at the Prado in November. Marcy Melley, Catering Manager, took fabulous care of our group. We had a beautiful room, excellent service and delicious food! You could feel the energy in the room too…..we were networking gurus!!!

We also had a record breaking amount of people attending…28 members and guests! Our guests were Marcy and Andrea from the Prado, Tony from San Diego Desserts (who was actually Marcy’s guest and provided a yummy dessert for all of us), Renee Hirsh of RMH Events, Lola Chaney from West Coast Print Brokers, Katrina Lacape of Magical Party Rentals, Chef Scott Wagner of Chile Co Catering, Luciana Driver and Cheli Madrid from St. Tropez Breads, Desserts & Catering and Ann Strobel, Wedding Coordinator.

Before the meeting was over, Renee Hirsch and Katrina Lacape handed in their applications. Lola Chaney and Chef Scott are sending in their applications and the ladies of St. Tropez are talking with their boss to get his okay to join too. Talk about a membership rush…wow!!!

Our speaker was Shannon from True Photography. She gave a wonderful presentation and showed us a DVD of various weddings and brides….she does simply amazing work, stylish, crisp, creative and beautiful. That’s our Shannon!

Everyone enjoyed the “Mystery Business Card Exchange”…each person took a card and had to do a quick interview of that person, trying to gather new facts to share. Then as the introduction was given, we had to guess who was being introduced. Our members did a good job because sometimes we couldn’t figure out who the person was until the end of the introduction. It was not only a fun exercise but informative!!!

Marcy gave us a bottle of champagne to give to our raffle winner….congrats to Andy! Speaking of winners, our congrats to Andy Hagenah, Jeffrey Martin of John Franklin Jewelers and Haydee’s Creative Flowers….they came in first in their respective categories for the Ten News Contest. Many of us were nominated for the contest and it was wonderful that some of our members actually won!

Dennis Way is going to send some pictures from our meeting….isn’t that a great bonus to the minutes?!!

Final nominations were taken for our upcoming elections. The ballots will be sent this week via email and the new Board of Directors will be announced at the Holiday Party! Hey, did someone say Holiday Party?

It’s coming up on Wednesday, December 5^th at the Napa Valley Grille, 7pm to 9pm. Bring a $15.00 present if you want to participate in the gift exchange…it’s always a fun time! If you haven’t rsvp’d and want to attend, please contact me asap and we’ll get you added to the list. Liz Odle is planning a wonderful evening for all of us and we’re excited to be partying at her lovely venue!!!

And, just a quick note, as your outgoing President, thank you for your support, ideas, laughter, participation and networking! It has been my pleasure to be working with all of you and I’ve learned a lot traveling down the path you presented to me.
